Lift Truck Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post should not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Do not permit items like for example lighters or matches to be utilized when someone is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be well ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
