Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank has to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety factor, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a safe enclosure which can just be accessed by authorized employees. It is really important for the operator's safety, as well as everybody they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
The fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected from vehicle impact. Using retaining systems like concrete bumpers for example, could carry out this job. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also vital to have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Furthermore, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also should be trained to safely and effectively utilize the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a forklift should be properly trained. This training includes a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. Once the training sessions have been completed, the person has to be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the correct method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center situated inside the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This would also cover the propane which is used to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all personnel at all times. If any exposure incident happens for instance, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is considered necessary, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a doctor if you truly think it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
