Forklifts or lift trucks are powered industrial trucks that are typically used in the transportation and lifting of supplies for various operations. These types of equipment are usually used within the dockside, warehousing, construction and mining applications.

The forklift can be referred to lots of different names, depending on their functions. Several different examples of these names are: stacker trucks, lift trucks, fork trucks and trailer loaders. These machines are used throughout the world, mainly in the manufacturing and warehousing industry.

The first forklifts made their debut in the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when they were used as part of the construction of the 1906 Pennsylvania railroad. During that time, platform trucks were launched to help in the transportation of products. These first platform trucks were battery powered. The trucks regained their popularity in the First World War when extreme shortage of labor occurred because of all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts really arrived on the market to stay.

There are essentially 2 main types of forklift: those dealing with heavy cargo and those that can handle light cargo. The light models consist of: towing tractors, side loaders, hand pallet trucks and walkie starters. These kinds of machines are built for handling lighter loads and they are not suitable for extremely heavy cargo. The specific load capacity of the machine is posted in the owner's handbook and on the equipment itself. Some examples of the big truck types include: telescopic handlers, walkie order picking trucks and truck mounted forklifts.

On the market nowadays, there are many models of forklifts available. Each can provide various load capacities. Most of the time in warehouse operations, the lighter models is used. Bigger models are usually seen within the shipping industry. Some models have a tilting mast to make the load bend so as to counteract any slipping.

Most forklift models with have rear steering wheels as this particular design aspect helps to increase the maneuverability of the machinery. Additionally, this steering manner comes in really handy when operating around corners. These machines could be unstable due to their changing centers of gravity. It is a really good idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Specialized forklifts are yet another kind. These machinery include explosion proof trucks and articulated counterbalance trucks. The explosion proof trucks are used in environments and factories that deal with flammable supplies.
