Driving a forklift is far more complicated than driving a car. A forklift operator must be highly skilled and trained in utilizing a forklift. Driving a lift truck requires a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also referred to as OSHA reports that 85 people die in forklift-related accidents per year. Roughly 35,000 people are injured each year in forklift accidents. Almost 50% of operator deaths result from a lift truck tip over.

To prevent tip overs, it is important that drivers know how to accurately assess load weight. In the construction business, the weight of a load is normally posted right on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the whole weight of the load will be about 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator should take more weight into account.

It could be unsafe if the driver makes poorly informed estimates as the loads actual weight and whether the equipment could handle the load. If a driver could not be sure about the load weight, he must ask for assistance from the supervisor.

Another cause of tip overs is failure to pull up near enough to a building to place or lift a load with an extended boom. It is important to use the load chart to avoid tipping the lift truck. Even when a forklift does not really tip over, an accident has occurred whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Although damage might not be obvious, the rear axle can have been broken when hitting the ground.

Lift trucks may even tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded forklift could tip if an operator has positioned a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the driver reverses the forklift and turns abruptly whilst bringing the boom down, the center of gravity will be pushed to the edges of the forklift and a tip over might take place. An operator should always use the joysticks to be able to lower and retract the fork.
