Based on the lift truck rules, an employer is not required to repeat past training of a new operator. To be able to deal with certain workplace hazards and specific workplace equipment, training has to be supplemented. For example, an operator doesn't need to be trained to maneuver a forklift on a ramp if that place of work does not contain a ramp; however, if the operator is really assigned to work someplace that has a ramp, it is necessary that extra training needs to be offered.
Trainees could operate a motorized industrial truck only when they are under the direct supervision of individuals who have the experience, training and knowledge to train operators and evaluate their competence operating the machinery. The trainees could only learn in an environment where such operation does not endanger other employees or the trainee themselves.
It is essential to make a practical evaluation within the workplace. If a third party training provider is chosen, it is wise to have the training occur at the workplace, using lift trucks at the workplace to be as accurate as possible.
Once an operator has successfully passed training with records maintained by the employer, they are said to be certified. The certification should include the date of training, the name of the operator, and the name of the individual performing the assessment and training and lastly the evaluation date. Though certain state OSHA bodies require the issue of an operator's certificate, the Federal OSHA does not need it.
Every three years, refresher training is required. It could also become mandatory to those operators who have demonstrated some type of deficiency in safe lift truck operation. Like for instance, refresher training would be triggered by certain occurrences including: if there is a near miss or an accident, if a different kind of lift truck is introduced to the workplace, if a supervisor observes operating unsafely and if an operator received a poor 3 year evaluation.
When unsafe use of a forklift is noticed, it should be noticed that refresher training is not always the solution. For example, if an operator is intentionally disobeying workplace safety rules, it could be required to implement disciplinary action. And lastly, even though training lift truck operators is a requirement, it is necessary to practice forklift awareness training for pedestrians and other staff working in the vicinity of forklifts so as to make sure that everyone will be safe.
