A type of equipment in the material handling business that can be used to lift and transport loads from one location to another is called a forklift. Each component of a forklift has a specific function. Various components could be used to transport the load vertically or horizontally.

Mast
The forklift mast refers to all the parts that lower and lift the load. There are various kinds of masts for lifting loads to various heights: triplex, quad, simplex and duplex.

Power Supply
There are four various ways you can power a forklift: electric, gas, diesel and propane. The battery is located within the cab underneath the seat. The propane tank is on the rear of the truck. The fuel tank on diesel and gas forklifts is beneath the back of the truck.

Cab
The forklift cab is positioned within the center of the truck. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the informational gauges and controls. The steering wheel, gas pedal, brake, lifting controls and tilting controls are all situated in the cab.

Frame
Carrying all the biggest forklift components is the truck frame. This includes the counterweights situated at the rear which prevents the truck from tipping over when loaded. The frame consists of the overhead guard that protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the wheels, driveshaft and axles.
